Why Rework Development Initiative?

Kenyan mainstream Media has for a long time been occupied by politics and denied airtime to reporting development issues in the country the way it should. This means that most development initiatives go unreported however much they contribute to the welfare of the Kenyan people. The same applies to reporting development ineffectiveness in Kenya.

Most of these development approaches are donor driven, controlled or dependence in terms of their implementation. The over reliance on donor funds for local priority development needs cannot be sustained and this makes community development to only exist in paper. In the process of development, both donors and recipients are the major stakeholders which in most cases leave the community as spectators. In several years of experience, recipient organizations have formed a cohesive partnership with donors that make it hard for new entrants to break. Donors are giving to people and not organisations in most cases!

The requirements for accessing funds have become very technical for most organizations to meet and even proposal writing have become a profession and diverted from its original goal of soliciting for funds. Nowadays writing a fundable project is a preserve of the lucky few who know the technical terms the donor wants and this keeps on changing from time to time. Some of these approaches if not most of them are based on theories and research but with very significant practical application.

The much-needed leadership has completely lacked and governance structure have collapsed as leaders scramble for resources (natural and artificial) in total madness of consumerism. Corruption is thriving as leaders use their positions to fleece their subjects and invite foreign investors to help them in this scramble.

Globalisation has brought both negative and positive contribution to Kenya. Natural calamities such as severe droughts and floodings were not there in the past but are now with us as a result of Climate Change. Multinationals have surrounded us competing with local small businesses without paying back anything to the many customers through Corporate Social Responsibility. Competition in the global market is far too high for developing countries like Kenya and is not fair.

All these have created conflicts and instability not only in Kenya but around the World! We cannot afford to continue with this status quo! We all have a responsibility to create the much-needed change! This is the main goal of Rework-Development Initiative…
